American Flag in field

SOUTH OGDEN, Utah – Staff and residents at Avamere at Mountain Ridge, an assisted living and memory care community in South Ogden, Utah, invite their local community to a Veterans Program to honor all those who currently serve and those who have sacrificed their lives.

This program will be held November 11 from 2-3 p.m. at Avamere at Mountain Ridge. The Military Academy of Riverdale will present the colors during the Veterans Program and attendees will hear from Dennis Howland, a Vietnam veteran who works at the Layton City Vietnam Memorial Wall Replica.

Howland initiated the idea in 2015 for a replica of the monument in Washington D.C. for his local town of Layton City. The wall was built and dedicated three years later in July 2018.

This monument holds 58,317 names of service men and women who died during the Vietnam War, 366 of which were from Utah and six from Layton City.

Howland has dedicated his life post-war to honoring those who served, those who lost their lives, and the families they left behind during the Vietnam War.

Since moving to Utah, Howland organized the Welcome Home Parade They Never Got, a parade recognizing the soldiers who came home from the Vietnam War during the 1970s only to be mocked and alienated by fellow Americans. It was at this time he also began work on a memorial wall for his local town.

Howland knows what it’s like to lose someone you love, feeding his motivation to honor veterans.

“That’s why I do what I do today,” Howland shared in a book commemorating the Vietnam War. “Because I have friends on the wall. My men are on the wall. And as all Marines will understand – Semper Fi, my brothers and sisters of the wall. Semper Fi.”

Hear from Howland and honor veterans this Veterans Day at Avamere at Mountain Ridge – 1885 East Skyline Drive in South Ogden, Utah.
